GEO vs AIO vs AEO. How are new AI search engine positioning different?
Author
Piotr Rompca

Until recently, positioning was associated mainly with one goal: to achieve a high position in Google and obtain clicks from organic results. The user entered a query, browsed the list of links, clicked on several results and independently compared the found information.
This model still works, but it is no longer the only way to find information.
This is why new concepts have appeared in marketing and positioning: GEO, AIO and AEO.
These are not just fashionable shortcuts. Each of these concepts describes a different part of the change that is already affecting the visibility of websites, online stores and brands on the Internet. The problem is that these abbreviations are often used interchangeably, which leads to wrong decisions. GEO, AIO and AEO do not mean the same thing. They also do not replace SEO. Rather, they expand classic positioning with new places where the company can be noticed by the user.
This is only the first level of this change. In the next article, we show in more detail how searching for information is changing today and what it means for company websites:
How search is changing today. Should companies change their websites and how?
Why are there new abbreviations: GEO, AIO and AEO?
For many years, the search engine acted as a catalog of answers. Google indexed the pages, assessed their quality and showed the user a list of results. The website owner’s task was to prepare the content, structure, technique and domain authority in such a way as to be as high as possible in these results.
Today, the search engine increasingly acts as an assistant. It not only shows links, but tries to understand the user’s intention, collect information from various sources and assemble an answer from them.
The difference is fundamental.
In classic SEO, the company fought mainly for clicks. In the new model, it also fights for its content, brand, product, service or data to be recognized by the AI system as a reliable source of answers.
User may ask:
"which online store to choose for a B2B company?"
“what is the difference between SEO and GEO positioning?”
“which agency implements WooCommerce stores and deals with SEO?”
“how to prepare a company website for AI search engines?”
In the traditional model, Google would show a list of results. In the generative model, the system can immediately prepare an answer, summary, list of criteria or recommendation. In this scenario, just being on the first page of Google still matters, but it is not enough. What also matters is whether the content on the website is written and organized so that AI can correctly understand it, extract specific information from it and safely use it as a source.
How do algorithms reflect E-E-A-T?
GEO
is responsible for visibility in generative AI responses.
AEO
is responsible for easily obtaining short, specific answers.
AIO
most often refers to visibility in Google AI Overviews or, more broadly, to optimization for artificial intelligence systems.
Each of these approaches has a different application, but they all have one common element: the website must be readable not only by humans, but also by the systems that analyze and synthesize the information.
What is GEO?
In practice, GEO refers to visibility in environments such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and other search engines or assistants based on language models. The user no longer has to enter the classic phrase into Google. They can ask a long, specific question in an AI tool and expect a response that combines information from various sources.
For the company, this means a change of purpose. It’s not just about ranking high in search results. It is also about AI being able to recognize the company as a reliable source of knowledge, an example, a supplier, an expert or one of the recommended options.
Example
A company implementing online stores should not only think about the phrase “WooCommerce online store”. She should also think about queries like:
“which online store engine should I choose for a company that wants to develop B2B sales?”
“when is WooCommerce enough and when is it better to choose PrestaShop or Magento?”
“how to prepare an online store for SEO and AI search?”
“Who should I entrust with the development of an online store with ERP integration?”
In such queries, the user is no longer looking for a single term. He looks for decisions, comparisons, interpretations and recommendations. The AI system must therefore collect data, assess its reliability and create an answer. GEO is all about giving your company’s content a chance to enter the process.
Well-prepared content for GEO usually has several features.
It contains specific information, not general declarations.
Answers real questions from customers.
Explains the context, causes and consequences.
Shows examples, scenarios and comparisons.
It has a clear heading structure.
Are shipping costs, processing times and payment methods visible before the last step?
Contains data, definitions, tables or structured conclusions.
It builds credibility through experience, authorship and consistency of information about the company.
GEO is not about adding a few sentences “for AI”. Rather, it is a way of building content that is useful to humans and at the same time easy to use by the language model.
If the article is chaotic, full of generalities, without specifics and without a clear answer to the user’s question, AI has no reason to treat it as a good source. However, if the text is complete, logical, up-to-date and contains valuable information, there is a greater chance that the system will use it when creating a response.
Do you want to check whether your website has a real chance of appearing in AI responses?
Let us analyze its content, structure and visibility in generative search engines.

What is AEO?
AEO, i.e. Answer Engine Optimization, is preparing content so that search engines, voice assistants and response systems can quickly extract a specific, unambiguous answer to the user’s question.
AEO is an older and more structured approach than GEO. It comes from the need to provide direct answers in places such as featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice results, voice assistants and various types of answer engines.
In AEO, precision is the most important thing.
User asks:
"what is GEO?"
“how long does it take to create a website?”
"what is the difference between a WooCommerce store and a PrestaShop store?"
"how to add structured data to a page?"
"When is it worth rebuilding an online store?"
Well-prepared content should quickly answer such a question. Preferably without a long introduction, without hiding the answer in the fifth paragraph and without spilling water.
AEO works particularly well for definitional, comparative, procedural, decision, cost and time queries. These are questions such as: “what is it”, “what is the difference”, “how to do it”, “when is it worth it”, “how much does it cost” or “how long does it take”.
Example:
if the website has a heading “How long does it take to create an online store?”, there should be a short answer directly below it. Only later can you develop the topic.
Poor answer:
The second answer is still general, but gives the user a real point of reference. It is also easier to use by a search engine or AI system.
Therefore, AEO requires good content formatting. Question headings, short answers under headings, FAQ sections, comparison tables, step lists, definitions and structured data help with this.
AEO does not mean that the entire text has to be short. The article can be extensive, but it should contain fragments that can be easily separated as a stand-alone answer. This is important for both classic Google and AI systems.
What is AIO?
AIO is the most ambiguous concept, so it is worth clarifying it.
In a narrower sense, AIO means optimization for Google AI Overviews, i.e. summaries generated by artificial intelligence in Google results. These are the answers that appear above the classic organic results and try to immediately summarize the topic for the user.
In a broader sense, AIO is sometimes developed as Artificial Intelligence Optimization, i.e. general optimization of the presence of a brand, website or content in artificial intelligence systems. In this approach, AIO partially overlaps with GEO, so in practice it is always worth clarifying what we are talking about.
Why is it important?
Because Google AI Overviews works in a different context than ChatGPT or Perplexity. The user is still on Google. Still uses the search engine. It still sees classic results, ads, maps, graphics, and other SERP elements. The difference is that an AI-generated response may appear above the results.
There are two consequences for the company here.
Therefore, AIO must be treated as a separate area of visibility. This is not just a classic position ranking. It’s a fight to make Google recognize a given page as a valuable source for creating a synthetic answer.
Content useful for AIO should be consistent with the user’s intention, well-organized, specific, up-to-date, understandable, credible and related to the authority of the website and brand.
AIO is closely related to SEO as Google continues to use its ecosystem of indexing, quality assessment and content understanding. It is impossible to sensibly optimize for AI Overviews if you ignore the basics of SEO.
However, visibility in AI also has another side: the user increasingly often receives an answer without having to click on an organic result. We develop this topic in more detail in the article:
The phenomenon of organic traffic loss, i.e. the loss of clicks from traditional organic results in favor of direct generative AI responses
GEO, AEO and AIO in a simple comparison
| Area | GEO | AEO | AIO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Presence of brand or content in the AI-generated response | Providing a short, specific answer | Presence in AI summaries on Google |
| Where it works | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, generative search engines | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice search, answer engines | Google AI Overviews |
| Content type | Extensive guides, analyses, comparisons, case studies, reports | Definitions, FAQ, instructions, step lists, tables | Content that responds to Google users’ expanded queries |
| Method of assessment | Whether the content is reliable, complete and useful for synthesis | Is the answer clear, short and easy to draw out? | Can the page be a source of summary in Google |
| The biggest risk | No citation despite good content | Too general or long-winded answer | Replying on Google may reduce clicks |
| Relationship with SEO | SEO is essential, but it is not enough on its own | SEO helps with indexation and structure | SEO is very important because AIO works in the Google ecosystem |
The simplest way to put it is:
SEO
helps the website be found and indexed.
AEO
helps the system quickly draw a specific answer.
AIO
helps you appear in the generated Google summaries.
GEO
helps to become a source, quote, recommendation or part of a broader response created by AI.
These are not four separate worlds. These are four layers of the same visibility.
Do GEO, AIO and AEO replace SEO?
No. GEO, AIO and AEO do not replace SEO.
This is one of the most important distinctions. Many companies, hearing about “AI positioning”, assume that classic SEO is no longer important. This is a wrong assumption.
SEO is still responsible for the foundations: website accessibility for robots, correct indexation, logical structure, speed of operation, security, correct URL addresses, header structure, subpage descriptions, domain authority and matching the content to user intentions.
Without these elements, it is difficult to expect that the AI system will treat the website as a valuable source. Generative models and search engines in many cases use indexes, pages, documents and sources that must first be found, read and evaluated.
AEO adds a layer of response.
The wrong approach is:
The correct approach is:
The difference is big. In the first case, the company may neglect the foundations, which means that its content will not be clearly visible to either Google or AI systems. In the second case, SEO becomes the basis of a broader visibility strategy.
In practice, GEO does not work separately from classic SEO. If you want to better understand why technique, indexing and page structure are still the foundation of visibility in AI, check out the article:
SEO as a complementary part of GEO
What does a website need to have to have a chance to be visible in AI?
Not every website is ready for AI-powered search. Many websites have a nice layout, but poor information. To a human, such a page may look correct. It may be of little use to the search engine and the AI model because it does not contain specific answers, data, definitions, examples or a clear structure.
A website prepared for SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO should have several basic elements.
First, you need a logical structure for your headings. The H1 should clearly state the main topic of the page. H2 should divide the content into specific topics. H3 can expand on details. This helps the user, but also the systems analyzing the content.
Secondly, short answers placed directly under the questions are important. If the headline is “What is GEO?”, the answer should appear immediately, not just after a few paragraphs of introduction.
Third, the content should be specific. General statements such as "we offer comprehensive solutions tailored to customer needs" do not add much. It is better to write what problems the company solves, for whom, in what process and with what results.
Fourth, it is worth using tables, comparisons, step lists and FAQ sections. It's not a matter of aesthetics. It's a way of organizing information that makes it easier to extract answers.
Fifth, the website should build credibility. Information about the company, experience, team, specializations, projects, content authors, update dates and sources are important. AI doesn't just look for keywords. Context and trust in the source are increasingly important.
Sixth, company data should be consistent. The name, address, telephone number, registration details, business description and specializations should be consistent on the website, business cards, external profiles and industry publications.
Seventh, the website must be technically accessible. If key content is hidden, blocked, loaded in a way that is difficult to read, or inaccessible to robots, AI systems may have trouble using it. The technical basics still matter: indexation, speed, correct code, structured data, sitemap, robots.txt file and no accidental blocks.
Eighth, the content should be unique. It's not about artificial originality, but about real value. If an article repeats the same definitions that are found on hundreds of other sites, it is difficult to expect AI to consider it a particularly valuable source. Content based on experience, examples, comparisons, observations from projects and specific customer problems is better.
We can check which elements of your website support visibility in AI and which make it difficult for search engines to quote, index and correctly understand your content.

Content optimization itself is only part of a broader strategy. Companies should also prepare for a long-term change in the way they acquire traffic, inquiries and customers. We write more about this in the article:
How should companies future-proof themselves in information retrieval and AI?
The most common errors in the meaning of GEO, AIO and AEO
Treating GEO as the new name for SEO.
GEO is not a new packaging for the same activities. This is a different level of visibility related to how AI models select, synthesize and present information.
Opting out of SEO. Opting out of SEO.
Since AI has appeared, some companies assume that classic SEO no longer makes sense. In practice it is the opposite. The more systems use data available on the web, the more important it is whether the website is properly built, accessible and indexable.
The belief that it is enough to add an FAQ at the end of the article.
FAQ helps, but it’s no substitute for good content. If the entire article is general, outdated, or disjointed, a few questions and answers at the end won’t solve the problem.
Writing only for key phrases.
For years, classic SEO used texts prepared mainly to “cover a phrase”. In AI search, a complete response to the user’s intent is more important. Phrases are still important, but they can’t be the only goal.
Copying definitions and duplicating content of competitors.
AI systems have access to a huge number of similar texts. A page that contributes nothing of its own has a weaker reason to be cited or used as a source.
No information about the author, company or experience.
In areas requiring trust, anonymous content is weaker than material clearly associated with a brand, specialist, team or specific experience.
Data inconsistency.
If a company describes itself differently in different places on the Internet, uses different names, has outdated data or conflicting information about its offer, it makes it difficult for AI systems to clearly understand what it does.
Measuring success solely in organic traffic.
In the age of AI, some visibility may not end with a click. The user can see the brand in the AI response, remember it, and only then enter the company name in Google or go directly to the website. Therefore, in addition to traffic, you also need to monitor brand queries, mentions, citations and the quality of acquired users.
Which approach is most important for companies?
The most important thing is not to choose one shortcut. A company should not wonder whether it needs SEO, GEO, AEO or AIO in isolation. A better question is: Is our website understandable to humans, indexable by Google and structured enough for the AI system to use as a source?
For service companies
the key elements will be service descriptions answering real customer questions, guides explaining problems and purchasing decisions, case studies, industry sections, a clearly described cooperation process and information about experience and specialization.
For online stores
full product data, good category descriptions, technical parameters, product availability, prices, opinions, structured data, clear category architecture, comparisons and shopping guides will be important.
For local companies
Consistent NAP data, Google business card, customer reviews, local subpages, description of the serviced area, information about specialization and availability will be important.
For B2B companies
reports, analyses, comparisons of solutions, process descriptions, educational materials, implementations and specific examples of customer problems will be particularly important.
Each type of company needs a slightly different set of activities, but the principle is common: the website must become a source of knowledge, not just an advertising brochure.
AI search engines don’t need more generic terms. They need content from which they can draw an answer, understand the context and assess the company’s credibility.
In e-commerce, this change will go even further, because AI systems will not only search for information, but also support or independently complete purchases. We develop this topic in the article:
Artificial intelligence will do shopping for us. The era of AI agents in e-commerce
Why are there new abbreviations: GEO, AIO and AEO?
Summary
GEO, AIO and AEO are not a fad or simple SEO replacements. This is a response to changing the way users look for information and make decisions.
SEO is still the foundation. It ensures that the website can be found, indexed and rated by search engines.
AEO helps build content so that a specific answer can be easily extracted by Google, a voice assistant or a response system.
AIO primarily concerns visibility in the generated Google AI Overviews summaries, where the user can receive an answer without navigating to the page.
GEO increases the chance that a brand, offer or content will be used as a source, quote, recommendation or part of a broader response created by AI.
Companies that continue to write content solely for keywords will gradually lose their advantage. Companies that start building websites as reliable, structured sources of knowledge will have a greater chance of appearing where users actually start looking for information and making decisions.
So it’s not about abandoning SEO. The idea is to develop SEO into a new visibility model: for Google, for the user and for artificial intelligence systems.

FAQ
Czy GEO to nowe SEO?
No. GEO is not a new name for SEO. GEO extends classic positioning with visibility in responses generated by artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or other generative systems.
Czym różni się GEO od AEO?
GEO focuses on ensuring that the brand or content is used in a broader AI response, comparison, recommendation or synthesis. AEO focuses on ensuring that the system can quickly provide a short, specific answer to a user’s question.
Czym jest AIO?
AIO most often means optimization for Google AI Overviews, i.e. summaries generated by artificial intelligence in Google results. Sometimes the abbreviation AIO is also used more broadly as Artificial Intelligence Optimization, i.e. optimization of the brand’s presence in AI systems.
Czy SEO nadal ma sens?
Yes. SEO is still the foundation of visibility. Without proper indexation, website structure, speed of operation, technical availability and content quality, AI systems may have problems finding and using information from the website.
Czy każda firma musi wdrażać GEO, AIO i AEO?
Any company that acquires customers through a website should at least adapt its content and website structure to new ways of searching. This does not always mean a complete rebuild of the website. Often, the first step is to organize the content, headlines, FAQs, company data and technical accessibility of the website.
Czy AI zabierze ruch ze strony?
Some simple queries may end without a click because the user receives the answer directly from Google or an AI tool. At the same time, users who click after reading the AI’s response are often better educated and closer to the purchase decision. Therefore, the number of visits alone should not be the only measure of effectiveness.
Od czego zacząć optymalizację strony pod AI?
It’s best to start with the basics: check indexation, header structure, content quality, FAQ sections, company data consistency, page speed, structured data and whether the content answers real customer questions. Only later is it worth moving on to more advanced GEO activities and visibility analysis in AI systems.
