SEO doesn't disappear, it just changes its role
With the advent of Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and other AI systems, the question increasingly arises: does SEO still make sense?
The answer is yes. But his role is changing.
Today, SEO should not be understood only as the fight for a position in Google and a click from a classic organic result. In the era of AI, it becomes the foundation for wider visibility: in search engines, generative responses, citations, recommendations, comparisons and brand queries.
GEO does not replace SEO. GEO expands SEO with a new way of thinking about visibility.
SEO is responsible for whether a page can be found, downloaded, indexed and understood. GEO is responsible for whether a brand, domain or specific content has a chance to appear in the AI response as a source, citation or comparison element.
If a website is not properly indexed, technically accessible, structured and reliable, it has no good starting point in either Google or AI Search.
Therefore, the question should not be:
“Is SEO still necessary?”
A better question is:
“Is our SEO prepared for the new search model?”

Where does the belief that SEO is losing its importance come from?
The belief that SEO is losing importance did not come out of nowhere. Many companies are actually seeing declines in organic clicks, lower CTR, and less traffic to some of their informational content.
The reason is simple: the user increasingly receives an answer without having to visit the website.
Google AI Overviews can give you a short summary above the organic results. ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude can collect information from several sources and respond directly in the conversation. As a result, the user does not always have to click on several pages to understand the basics of the topic.
This particularly affects simple information content:

- articles like "what is...",
- general lists,
- short explanations with no unique value.
However, this does not mean that SEO has stopped working.
This means that some SEO results will no longer be visible only as a click. The brand may appear in the AI response, the user can remember its name, come back later via Google, go directly to the website or send a query after previously interacting with the content in the AI tool.
A decline in some clicks does not mean the end of SEO. It means changing the way we measure its effects.

SEO, AEO and GEO should not be treated as competing approaches. These are three layers of one visibility strategy.
Each of them is responsible for a different element of the process.

Visibility in AI starts earlier than many companies realize.
Not from prompts. Not from one new article. Not from the magic marker.
It starts with whether the robot can enter the website, download the content, understand its structure and associate it with a brand, service, product or topic.
If a website is not indexed, poorly constructed or blocks robots, its chances of being used by AI systems are limited.

Technical SEO is still key to visibility in AI
Technical SEO has not lost its importance. In many cases, it has become even more important.
AI systems need clean, stable and easy-to-process data. If a website is slow, has chaotic URLs, blocks robots or hides the most important content, its visibility potential in AI will be limited.
The most important technical elements are primarily indexation. The company should know whether key subpages are visible in Google and Bing. This applies not only to the home page, but also to services, categories, products, articles, case studies, FAQ and local pages.
The second element is crawlability, i.e. the ability for robots to freely download content. If important sections of the page are blocked, inaccessible, or require complex rendering, the robot may not reach key information.
The third element is robots.txt. This file should be controlled consciously. It should not accidentally block important sections of the page or robots that are responsible for searching and citations in AI tools.
The next element is sitemap.xml. The sitemap should show current and important addresses, not cluttered, old or irrelevant URLs.
HTTP statuses are also important. Working subpages should return status 200. 404 errors, redirection loops, incorrect redirections and chaos in canonicals make the website difficult to interpret.
Page speed, Core Web Vitals and the mobile version also matter. It’s not because AI “likes fast sites” out of context. The idea is that an efficient, stable and correctly rendered website is easier to download, analyze and evaluate.

Content SEO as a basis for citation in AI
Content SEO isn’t going away either. However, the way it is planned and assessed is changing.
In the past, SEO content often focused on keyword phrases, text length, headings, meta title, meta description, and internal linking. These elements still matter, but they won't be enough if the text is generic, repetitive, and doesn't help the user make a decision.
Content supporting GEO should not only be visible, but also usable as a source of answers.

In practice, the answer-first model works well. First, we answer the user’s question, then we develop the topic.

Only later can you go into details.
This arrangement helps the user and the AI systems at the same time. A human understands the meaning of the answer faster, and a machine more easily identifies a fragment that can be used in synthesis.

SEO helps lead the user and the robot to the content. GEO requires this content to be specific and credible enough to be used in an AI response.
From keywords to intentions, entities and context
Keywords are still needed. They should not be thrown out of the strategy.
The problem begins when the strategy is based solely on a list of phrases.
In the GEO era, you need to think broader. What matters is not only the words entered into the search engine, but also intentions, decision-making questions, industry context and relationships between topics.
The classic approach might have started with the phrase:

Phrases are the entry point. However, the strategy should be built around the customer’s intentions, entities, topics and decisions.
Structured data as a bridge between SEO and GEO
Structured data is a good example of an element that combines classic SEO with new visibility in AI.
Schema.org and JSON-LD are not a magical way to appear in AI responses. It is not enough to implement a few tags for systems to start quoting a page.
However, structured data helps organize information. They show machines what is what: who is the author, what the subpage is about, what service it describes, what company publishes it and how the content connects to the rest of the website.

Linking, authority and mentions - classic SEO meets brand reputation
Authority still matters. However, the way it is understood is changing.
In classic SEO, a lot of attention was paid to links, referring domains, anchor texts, domain authority and website history. These elements may still be important, but in the GEO era they are not enough.
AI can treat the company’s official website as one of the sources, but it does not have to trust it uncritically. If a company calls itself an expert, but the Internet does not confirm this, the credibility is weaker.
Therefore, the following are also becoming more and more important:

GEO is not a shortcut. It will not fix a weak website, chaotic structure, lack of indexation and general content.
It can only expand a well-built foundation.
GEO will be weak if:

The effect of SEO + GEO must be measured more broadly than classic SEO. This does not mean that old records are invalid. You still need to analyze positions, clicks, impressions, CTR, organic traffic and conversions.
